The concept of "normalcy" often strikes a deep chord with many, as it's typically during disruptions to our

routine that we truly come to appreciate and yearn for the familiar. In a multitude of ways, the launch and

tour of the album "100,000 Whys" diverged significantly from the expected norm. This period marked the band's

first foray into hosting an online concert, appropriately named "Five Thousand Wheres", which also saw the

debut of their documentary "Seven Thousand Hows". This film chronicled their return to Nepal after a four-year

hiatus, and the band's ensuing tour across the nation which was filled with unexpected surprises and

challenges. However, even in the face of such unpredictability, Wang Wen maintained their tradition of

launching an album every two years and accompanying it with an expansive national tour. Their resilience in

adhering to this pace, despite the upheavals, had encapsulated their commitment to preserving constancy in

btw.想到一个新的slogan,Let’s make China normal again. ”

"This tour for our new album has been the longest yet for Wang Wen, due to the pandemic. We've successfully

made up for last year's cancelled concerts, and for that, I'd like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all

Q: Looking back on the "100,000 Whys" album release tour, which lasted half a year due to various delays, how

A: For Wang Wen, this undoubtedly stood as our lengthiest tour for an album. We're currently living in what

might be referred to as a "post-pandemic" era, a time filled with trials and uncertainties. The era before the

pandemic feels like a far-off memory now, so we've doubled down, and decided to place more of our effort and

energy than ever into confronting the present and the unforeseeable future.

Q: During the later part of the tour, the band had to undergo several nucleic acid tests to travel between

cities, and numerous tour dates were postponed. Given the unusual nature of this tour, did this period of

uncertainty affect your mental state?

A: Not in the slightest. Given the current circumstances, it's rather fortunate that bands in China can still

perform and tour around. Most foreign bands are still unable to resume their normal performance schedules due

to the significant challenges and pressures they face. Hence, we refrain from complaining, regardless of the

obstacles we encounter during the tour. Instead, we just give it our all, and hope for the best.

Once we arrived in Hefei, we received news that our performance had been temporarily postponed. So, we took

a group picture with the vacant venue as a backdrop.

Q: Compared to your previous tours, this one seemed more laid-back due to all the "uncertainties". How did

the band members deal with this change? What do you usually do during the rest of the tour?

A: We actually have a preference for intense touring, as a packed schedule keeps us in a consistent

performance mode, and the momentum it generates helps us fight off weariness. However, when there aren't

back-to-back performances, the adrenaline wears off, and everyone just falls into a state of lethargy. On

these so-called rest days, most of us would simply sleep the day away, confined to our rooms.

Q: You spent a significant amount of time in Tianjin and Hohhot. Do you have any memorable moments from

these cities? Considering that this was the Wang Wen's inaugural tour to Hohhot, how did you find the food,

A: Tianjin is my hometown. I'd guide them around, and grab a bite at any roadside eateries we happened upon.

Thankfully, everyone loved the food. The breakfast in Tianjin, in particular, was a hit, as it was affordable,

in abundance, and incredibly scrumptious. Hohhot, on the other hand, was an eye-opening experience. We were

instantly astonished by the city's spacious streets and less cluttered buildings, which provided a refreshing

sense of tranquility. We experienced some of our coldest days there, with the temperature plummeting to an

astounding -27 degrees Celsius on the night of our performance – reportedly the lowest in thirty-five years.

However, the locals in Hohhot were nothing but warm and seemed to enjoy a good drink. Those of us in the band

who drank were careful to drink responsibly during our time there, always keeping in mind to conduct ourselves

with decorum when dining with our local friends.

Q: What performances have you watched recently? Were there any that particularly resonated with you?

A: Over the past year and a half, apart from touring around, we have remained in Dalian. Though, we did catch

some performances on Hertz Space, as well as live performances of Tongue, Dirty Fingers, and FAZI, which we

felt were all rather excellent. Tongue gave an impactful performance, and Oh!Dirty Fingers' performance felt

so exotic, but FAZI's performance in particular was the most exciting one. We also watched a performance by

the German band Apparat online, which left quite an impression on us.

Q: Prior to each tour, Wang Wen will devise a sound structure tailored to the album together with the sound

and lighting engineers. How do you perceive the relationship between recording a piece in a studio and its

live rendition? Are there any differences between the recorded and live versions of the songs in "100,000

A: I have no strong opinions on this matter. In the studio, we have the opportunity to add elements that can

be challenging to replicate during rehearsals or live performances. Studio recordings can retain the majority

of the intricate details at varying sound pressures, so personally, I appreciate the experimental nature of

Live performances, on the other hand, are experiential. The powerful sound pressure and the deep bass notes,

which we don't usually hear in our daily lives, can make the performance a thrilling experience. This

experience can be augmented with the performance's visual impact, which is usually done through lighting

design and stage decorations. My goal is to incorporate various sound designs from the studio into our live

performances. In this regard, our live sound engineer Deng Chenglong has done an exceptional job. He's able to

highlight many details I had assumed would be difficult to execute in a live setting. In short, I view the

recording studio and live performance as two distinct environments, each with its unique strengths.

Q: What do you think makes a live performance lively and appealing to you?

A: At its core, it's the music that captivates us, enabling an effortless immersion into the experience. This,

combined with a top-notch sound system, evocative lighting, and compelling stage design, results in a wholly

immersive concert environment. Moreover, the audience plays a significant role, as their shared enthusiasm

contributes to the overall atmosphere. Well, that being said, I detest loud chatters around me during live

performances, as it somewhat dampens my enjoyment of the event.
